On This Episode:
Imagine being woken up in the middle of a transatlantic flight by a flight attendant asking for your assistance in a medical emergency. That’s the situation today’s guest, Dr. Erin Foley, found herself in recently. Find out how she navigated the tense situation and what she learned about these types of incidents that happen far more often than we hear about.
Dr. Foley is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in Maine who served as the President of the Main Association of Nurse Anesthetists in 2019 and 2020, and she used that experience as a CRNA to help her calm the passengers and crew aboard a flight to the IFNA Conference in Europe a few years ago. It’s a pretty incredible story and one that could benefit you on a future flight.
Here’s some of what we discuss in this episode:
- The medical emergency that she responded to while flying to Europe for the IFNA Conference.
- The unexpected discovery she made in the stool sample cup.
- What she found researching these types of incidents and what she found about altitude sickness.
- What medical equipment do they keep on the plane?
- Why you might want to reconsider asking for reimbursement for helping on a flight.
They were so appreciative that I had stepped up and said I would be there. And they were actually telling me how, especially in these really long trans-ocean flights, how they always feel better if they know somebody is on the plane, as opposed to just being hoping that somebody will respond when they do the overhead call.
