Airway Exchange – Ep. 25 – What Makes a Great CRNA Applicant?

Listen Now:

On This Episode:

What separates a strong nurse anesthesia applicant from someone who simply looks impressive on paper?

In this episode of Airway Exchange, Erin and Louisa sit down with Leah Gordon, DNP, APRN, CRNA, program director and assistant professor in the Nurse Anesthesiology Program at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota and author of The Provider Mindset: A Complete Guide to Becoming a Competitive Nurse Anesthesiology Applicant. Together, they explore what educators are really looking for during the admissions process and why GPA, ICU experience, shadowing hours, and a polished interview only tell part of the story.

Here’s some of what you’ll hear in this episode:

🧠 Think like a provider. Strong candidates begin developing the mindset of someone ultimately responsible for clinical decisions—not simply completing tasks.

⚖️ Aptitude + attitude matter. Gordon boils admissions down to two major qualities: whether applicants have the aptitude to succeed and the attitude to be coached and grow.

🎓 GPA doesn’t tell the whole story. Academic history matters, but educators also consider growth, experience, determination, and whether past performance reflects the applicant they are today.

🗣️ Don’t over-rehearse the interview. Being prepared helps, but an overly polished performance can make it difficult for interviewers to see the authentic person behind the answers.

💪 Grit matters after admission. Nurse anesthesia school demands substantial study time, discipline, support, and the ability to keep working when life inevitably becomes complicated.
