On This Episode:

Have you ever been inspired by a TED Talk and wondered whether you could inspire people with your own experience? Today’s guest did just that recently. Johnny Garza, MSN, CRNA, delivered a memorable TED Talk inspired by his practice and a personal story that proves life is too short and we should act on our most vulnerable dreams. He’ll share his experience from that TED Talk and tell us more about this inspirational story.

Johnny's journey to the TED stage was not without its challenges. He opens up about his initial fears of public speaking and how he overcame them through determination and practice. He candidly shares that, despite appearing confident in the operating room, the thought of addressing an audience was daunting. This vulnerability makes his message even more relatable, reminding us that even the most accomplished professionals face self-doubt.

Here’s some of what we discuss in this episode:

  • What motivated him to take the stage and how did he get a spot in TEDx?
  • The story of the 25-year-old who inspired this story after he administered her anesthesia.
  • The stress and emotion of delivering that speech in front of an audience and why anesthesia helps prepare you for this.
  • What advice would he share with others in this position?
  • His move from CRNA to being a pilot.

"It is more than I anticipated. I jumped onto stage and I'll be honest, I froze. Froze to the point where it felt like three minutes, but the audience said about 30 seconds. It was intimidating, but I know that the people that were doing these speeches were putting in so much effort and backstage. I don't know how all of us did it, but we did it."
