On This Episode:

The rate of cannabis use has exploded exponentially in the past 10 years and the widespread consumption demands us to be knowledgeable on the topic. Dr. Daniel King, CRNA, has become a dedicated subject matter expert in cannabis implications for anesthesia patients after taking an interest in the issues he was observing in his day-to-day practice. Today he’ll help educate us on the subject, the different risk factors, and what he’s learned about providing anesthesia for these patients.

For those that don’t know Dr. King, he is the Owner of DreamLion Anesthesia, and an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Nurse Anesthesia Program at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a consulting affiliate for TheAnswerPage, a daily cannabis education resource for medical providers. He also serves on the Practice Committee for the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA).

We had a LOT of questions to ask Dr. King and he tackled them all in stride. If you’re curious at all about cannabis use, this episode should be a great resource.

Here are some of the things you’ll learn on this show:

  • The legal status of cannabis today and has it’s evolved rapidly over the last few decades.
  • The lack of education on this subject despite the fact that cannabis use has overtaken tobacco use.
  • The different ways patients are using and consuming cannabis.
  • What we know about THC concentrations and anesthesia requirements.
  • The cardiac, respiratory and other risk factors for patients who use cannabis.

Check out the interview at the top of the page and use the timestamps to help you navigate through the many topics we discussed.

We know now that the incidence of cannabis use for the first time in modern human history has actually surpassed that rate of tobacco use.

-Dr. Daniel King

I started listening to this podcast religiously early on in my CRNA journey, a year before applying to CRNA school. The content in this podcast was one of my most helpful resources for getting into my first choice school, Wake Forest! It has also been a huge motivator for getting involved with the AANA now and throughout my career. I highly recommend this podcast to every prospective CRNA I meet.
