On This Episode:

Today we bring you another wonderful conversation from our trip to the mid-year assembly in Washington D.C. Sharon and Tracy Castleman, DNP, CRNA, APN-A, FAANA were on hand when Kris Rohde, CRNA received the AANA’s Daniel D. Vigness Federal Political Director Award. Afterward, we invited her to join the show to hear her story, talk about the role the FPD plays in each state, and share why the sacrifice has been well worth it.

Kris is a practicing CRNA in Nebraska and the efforts in her home state to get people to show up and be involved was recognized during the assembly. We wanted to hear more about the success she’s had so that others can pick up a thing or two and possibly apply it to their own state.

Here are some of the things you’ll learn on this show:

  • How she ended up in the role of FPD in Nebraska. [8:49]
  • The role mentoring played in her career and helped her grow. [11:40]
  • The importance of relationships with lobbyists. [17:25]

As I was serving on our board and doing other roles, I just kind of gradually started doing more with the political arena and attending more events. And then our FPD, I just watched her and she was amazing, and so I tried to fill her shoes.

-Kris Rohde, CRNA

Fighting for Inclusivity: How a CRNA Changed Her Community with Maureen McCartney Anderson

Our guest today has quite the story to tell about advocacy but it’s not the same advocacy we normally discuss on the show. Maureen McCartney Anderson, CRNA has been in-volved with her state association in New Jersey for a number of years and was on the path of advocating for professional rights, but that changed dramatically when her baby was born with handicaps. Now she’s pouring much of her energy into advocating for the special needs children’s population and making a difference in her community with the help of other CRNAs.

I started listening to this podcast religiously early on in my CRNA journey, a year before applying to CRNA school. The content in this podcast was one of my most helpful resources for getting into my first choice school, Wake Forest! It has also been a huge motivator for getting involved with the AANA now and throughout my career. I highly recommend this podcast to every prospective CRNA I meet.
